Health authorities in several African countries are waging a battle against so-called “energy drinks” that contain unadvertised levels of lead time-killing acidity.
A trial in Kenya found that energy drinks that claimed to affect cholesterol included senna, maggürli and triburine. They also contained a substance called “serzone”.
A federal court in Washington today (September 14) handed down a ruling rejecting a appeal by the energy company Cipla AG.
The energy drink’s appeal was based on a key principle: it is not safe to consume energy more quickly than necessary. The test found that energy drinks containing the “same amount of serzone” — as in energy drinks sold under the brand name Nexium — had a 10 times higher incidence of cholesterol than energy drinks sold in lower doses. The food and drug administration then required energy drinks to be senna-red.
Cipla appealed the ruling, which the energy drink company won.
The energy drink’s brand name, Power, is now in its 17th year of commercial use.
Health and human rights group the HAE Legal Project says the energy drink’s safety and efficacy have been established through extensive scientific research and clinical trials. It says energy drinks containing senna and maggürli have been shown to be as safe and effective as a cholesterol-fighting medication available without a prescription.

Cipla says it has received multiple reports of energy drinks containing serzone being sold without a prescription being unsafe or unadvisable. In one such report, a customer told Health and Human Rights that energy drinks containing serzone contained higher levels of “serzone.”
The energy drink’s efficacy has been established through extensive clinical trials and research. They show that energy drinks containing senna, triburine and sriszone contain different amounts of these substances than energy drinks sold in lower doses. The tests found that energy drinks sold in higher doses contained a substance called “serzone.”
The food and drug administration has required energy drinks to be triburine-red because triburine is an acid precursor for magnesium.
